Occupational diseases were first documented in 1700. Wikipedia defines occupational disease as any chronic ailment that occurs as a result of work or occupational activity. It is an aspect of occupational safety and health.
Over the past 50 years, the conversation regarding occupational disease and employee health has shifted dramatically. Back then, on-the-job safety protocol and health insurance were the two primary ways employers invested into the health of their employees. Fast forward to today and employers realize that having a company wellness program is not only simple, but also great business – keep workers healthy and happy while keeping company costs down.
It was a no brainer, right? And so the trend began – companies jumping on the fitness band wagon, implementing activities-based wellness initiatives galore: an annual fitness challenge here; a nutritional seminar there; a company team for the local 5k. What employers didn’t realize was that these “one time” initiatives were short-term quick “band aids” that eventually fizzled out; employees got bored and the usual events became stale.
So, what is the solution? First, employers need to shift their focus from an activities-based mindset to a results-based one. Second, employers need to broaden their influence to create a corporate culture of wellness; one within their entire network, from top to bottom. And last but not least, employers need to establish a trusting relationship between themselves and their employees and then, only then, can sustainable and successful results be achieved for the long term.
